Mountsorrel Village Museum Unveils New Geopark Corner

Mountsorrel’s Village Museum has unveiled the Geopark’s first permanent Geopark Corner, featuring new displays on the local geology and Charnwood Forest’s fossils.

The Geopark Corner complements our Information Hubs in introducing visitors to Charnwood Forest and what makes it so special. In addition, the Corner includes a display on the local geology of Mountsorrel, with several touchable rock specimens for visitors to see, and interpretation on the history of quarrying in the village.

This new Geopark Corner also hosts an exhibit on the fossils of Charnwood Forest, revealing the amazing story of these 560 million year old residents of our region. The fossil display includes beautifully lit replicas of the fossils, 3D models of what they would have looked like when alive, and a set of animations of the creatures created by Czech palaeoartist Martin Lisec.

Mountsorrel Village Museum is run by the Mountsorrel Museum and Heritage Trust, and also features several exhibitions on the history and heritage of Mountsorrel. As well as displays on Mountsorrel Castle and other historic stories, visitors can also consult the documentary and photographic archives to do their own research.

The Museum, located above Mountsorrel Library, is open:
Thursdays: 2-4pm
Fridays: 2-4pm
Saturdays: 9.30am-Noon

Address: Church House, The Green, Mountsorrel, LE12 7AF

The new Geopark Corner, as well as some of the local history exhibitions, have been developed with funding from the Geopark, thanks to support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Jack Matthews, Geopark Geoheritage Officer, said: “We are so pleased to be supporting this excellent local museum with a new an permanent Geopark Corner. Mountsorrel has a rich and varied history that is inextricably linked with the local geology, so it is wonderful to see an exhibition that brings geological and cultural heritage together in one place.
