A new woodland is taking root in the heart of Charnwood Forest, offering a unique opportunity to create a lasting tribute to someone special or mark a moment that matters.
Chitterman Wood is a 28-hectare site near Ulverscroft in Leicestershire. Former pastureland, it sits within the distinctive scenery of Charnwood Forest and was acquired by the National Forest in 2025.
The site includes 13 hectares of new woodland, planted during winter 2025/26, and the design includes further planting in the form of ten woodland groves, which are now available for you to dedicate. Ranging from 80 to 120 trees, each grove forms part of something much bigger. Over the past 30 years, the National Forest has helped reconnect landscapes shaped by centuries of coal mining and clay extraction, increasing forest cover across the area from around six per cent to more than 26 per cent.
At Chitterman Wood, the new planting has been carefully designed to reflect the character of Charnwood Forest. A rich mix of native tree species has been selected to create a resilient woodland that supports wildlife, responds to local conditions and can adapt to a changing climate. The woodland has been designed to feel natural; varied planting densities and irregular woodland edges echo the surrounding landscape, while areas bordering ancient woodland and mature hedgerows have been left to regenerate naturally from self-seeded trees. As the woodland matures, livestock will graze around the trees, helping to create a diverse mosaic of woodland, scrub and grassland.
Within this evolving landscape, each grove has its own identity. Carefully arranged groups of trees create open woodland edges, frame views and pathways, and blend seamlessly with the surrounding parkland. A public right of way crosses the site, providing year-round access for walkers.
Dedicating a grove offers a meaningful way to celebrate a person, family, achievement or special occasion while contributing to a woodland that will benefit future generations. Each dedication is recorded for 25 years, allowing time for the young woodland to establish and flourish. A discreet plaque can also be installed within the grove, with a personalised message. The woodland will continue to be managed for the long term, with a diverse mix of species helping to build resilience. Early management includes weed control and grassland maintenance, while future selective thinning may help ensure the healthiest trees have the space they need to thrive.
For those with a connection to Charnwood Forest, dedicating a grove offers the chance to create a lasting legacy while helping shape the future of the landscape.
