Visitors to the Geopark will find it even easier to take public transport in Charnwood Forest this August.
Thanks to the Fab Free Fares scheme from Leicestershire County Council, those travelling on select routes in Charnwood Forest on Saturdays can ride for free. Full details of the scheme can be found on the ChooseHowYouMove website.
One route that is included is the new LC15 bus linking Coalville and Leicester. Stops in Newtown Linford will place visitors on the doorstep of Bradgate Park, while stops in Markfield provide the opportunity to easily visit the Geopark’s Hill Hole and Markfield Wire Tramway geosites. Why not get off at Stanton-under-Bardon, and take a visit to the beautiful Billa Barra Nature Reserve, or a walk up Bardon Hill – the highest peak in Leicestershire?
Alternatively, why not take a free Saturday ride on the LC16 bus linking Ashby with Loughborough? Stops in Osgathorpe put you just a 20 minute walk from the amazing ruins of Grace Dieu Priory. Enjoy not having to drive as you step off in Shepshed, and take a wander along to Morley Quarry to learn about the oldest rocks in Charnwood Forest. Or hop off in Nanpantan, where you’ll be just a short walk from our Outwoods geosite – the best place to learn about the Geopark’s fossil superstar Charnia, one of the oldest animal fossils in the world.
Leave the car at home as you get into Charnwood Forest this August – for free! Note that the LC15 and LC16 services don’t operate on Sundays, and therefore the free offer is only available on Saturdays – August 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30.
