Meet Geopark volunteer Andrew

In this article, Andrew, one of our regular volunteers, shares his experience of being part of our geological conservation volunteer group:

I’ve always volunteered throughout my life on different projects and initiatives, so in August 2023 I attended an evening meeting at Morley Quarry, Shepshed hopefully becoming a prospective volunteer geoconservationist. This was one of the best decisions of my life!

My background is in geology, geography and quarrying, and being a very practical person, it was great to undertake jobs in the quarry and other locations within the Geopark, making a difference for the visiting public and educational establishments. And, the great group of volunteers have made a difference! I have also made new friends, sharing our interest in walking, keeping the countryside tidy and gardening.

The Geopark offers so many volunteering experiences and events, plus the opportunity to attend First Aid and supervisor courses – all free of charge and very useful in everyday life.

Finally I have to say a big thanks to the Geopark team for organising work days at various locations, making us very welcome, we always have an enjoyable time. This volunteering work is a wonderful way to stay active and contributing to a wonderful project here in Leicestershire.
