This summer the Geopark has been supporting people to care for Charnwood Forest’s fruit trees.
Our landscape based training for staff and volunteers who look after orchards and green spaces in Charnwood Forest Geopark continued in August, as a group learnt the art of summer pruning. The tutor Tim clearly demonstrated the benefits of a good pruning regime – you can see in the photo the size difference between an apple from a pruned tree (right), and one from a tree that hadn’t been pruned (left). We are grateful to Ratby orchard for allowing us to practice on their trees.
Our programme continues with Food Conversations on 9th and 17th September (still a few places left), tree seed collecting on 3rd October, and more orchard pruning and hedge laying later in the autumn.
