Charnwood Forest Geopark is proud to present a two-week exhibition in Coalville focusing on the historical importance of decorative tile-making to the region. Tiles play an important part in the industrial history of Charnwood Forest. From the Roman period onward, tiles have been part of the fabric of the region’s industrial heritage. More than sixty designs of medieval tiles were found at Ulverscroft Priory, some of which are believed to have been locally manufactured. In the modern period, decorative tile manufacture was prevalent in Coalville and Whitwick from the mid-nineteenth century. In addition to the history of tile-making, the exhibition features a selection of medieval tiles from Ulverscroft Priory and Victorian tiles manufactured by Edward Smith & Co., alongside tiles that were made by residents and friends of Charnwood Forest at a series of workshops held across the Geopark this summer. We hope that you’ll join us in celebrating this little known yet internationally acclaimed industry.
