A TEMPORARY EXHIBITION AT MOUNTSORREL MUSEUM
Tiles play an important part in the industrial history of Charnwood Forest. From the Roman period onward, tiles have been part of the fabric of the region’s industrial heritage. Medieval floor tiles have been found at Ulverscroft Priory and Mountsorrel Castle, and from the mid-nineteenth century decorative tile manufacture was prevalent in Coalville and Whitwick. The exhibition will guide you through some of the history of local tile use and production, linking this to the local geology, and local communities. This display also includes a new artistic commission of medieval-style floor tiles by Karen Slade, with designs that reflect the heritage of Charnwood Forest.
This exhibition has been curated by Charnwood Forest Geopark, and is part of a previous exhibition compiled with the help and support of the Coalville Heritage Society and the Whitwick Historical Group. Funded was provided by Charnwood Forest Geopark, with support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
